🏆 Azalea Wins 2026 Neighborhood Spirit Award

spirit_award

Our neighborhood was honored with the Neighborhood Spirit Award at the City of St. Petersburg’s Mayor’s Neighborhood Awards. With more than 100 neighborhoods in the city, being one of the 13 award recipients is a special distinction.

The award reflects the many neighbors who attend meetings, volunteer, and help support community activities throughout the year.

👪 Azalea at the CommUNITY Festival

community_festival

The Azalea Neighborhood Association had a great afternoon at the CommUNITY Festival in Azalea Park. Our booth was staffed with four or five volunteers at times and we saw a steady stream of visitors stopping by to spin the prize wheel, which quickly became the most popular attraction.

Families also enjoyed the peacock photo-op, and we handed out coloring pages for kids while sharing information about our neighborhood, its history, and upcoming activities.

Three Azalea residents also received passes to the VIP tent, where they enjoyed complimentary food and beverages. Their report back to us: fantastic.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth and helped show that Azalea is an active and welcoming neighborhood.

🎷A Night Back in the Roaring Twenties at Admiral Farragut Academy

roaring 20s

Several Azalea neighbors stayed in the neighborhood but stepped back into the Jazz Age this weekend at Admiral Farragut Academy’s Roaring 20s Soirée celebrating 100 years of Farragut Hall.

Azalea residents Blake Emory and Steve Elftmann were among the well-dressed attendees, joining a crowd of flappers, dapper gentlemen, and vintage car enthusiasts for an evening of music and history.

A live jazz band set the tone while guests enjoyed a generous buffet (or what might have been called a proper spread in 1926).

Parked nearby were two automobiles that looked right at home in the era when the Jungle Country Club and Jungle Hotel were in their heyday: a cream luxury sedan resembling a 1929–1931 Packard Standard Eight, and a black open utility vehicle similar to a 1917–1925 Ford Model T depot hack or pickup.

Between the vintage vehicles, period music, and sharply dressed guests, it wasn’t hard to imagine the scene as it might have looked nearly a century ago.

🥫 Food Drive is March 28-29

Food drive image

The quarterly West St. Pete Food Drive will take place March 28–29, bringing together neighborhoods across the west side of St. Petersburg to support the Love Thy Neighbor Community Market, a local food pantry that helps families in need.

Residents can drop off non-perishable food items and personal care products at neighborhood collection points throughout the weekend. Every donation helps keep the pantry stocked for the roughly 2,000 local residents it serves each month.

Azalea neighbors have always been generous supporters of the drive, and even a few items can make a real difference.

📝 March Meeting Recap

march_meeting

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Azalea Recreation Center. Brendan Turley chaired the meeting and SPPD Community Service Officer James Montanez provided the crime update.

There were nine reported incidents in the Azalea area, all minor except one vehicle theft where the car had been left unlocked with the keys inside.

Officer Montanez also reminded neighbors that e-bikes on the Pinellas Trail must be pedaled and follow the 20 mph speed limit. Warnings have recently been issued to riders violating the rules.

During open discussion, neighbors shared sightings of the two rare white peafowl that hatched in Azalea last summer. One has been seen spending time with the male peacocks while the other stays closer to the females.

At the end of the meeting, volunteers assembled the association’s festival booth and canopy in the auditorium to test things out ahead of the CommUNITY Festival in Azalea Park.

🎬 Outdoor Movie Night Recap

march movie night

The February Outdoor Movie Night was one of the best yet, with a great turnout under perfect weather. Neighbors gathered early for the block party before the movie Zootopia 2 started.

There was plenty of good food including pizza, an Indian dish, pita chips and hummus, popcorn, and the fire pit for classic s’mores.

Kids bounced on the trampoline and explored a new fort made from mango tree branches. At one point a dog spotted other pups and enthusiastically pulled its owner (chair and all) to the ground. Thankfully no harm done, but another memorable moment.

After the movie, Aleesha set up a telescope so neighbors could check out the Pleiades and the planetary alignment.

Thanks to Loren and Veronica for hosting. It was another great night of pizza, popcorn, stargazing, and good company in the backyard.
