Azalea Was Once a Famous Golf Course
Before Azalea was built, the land was home to the Jungle Country Club, one of the country’s most celebrated golf courses in the 1920s. Al Lang was club president for 15 years.

While playing here, Babe Ruth scored a double eagle and later called it one of the greatest thrills of his life. He played hundreds of rounds on the golf course.

During World War II, more than 10,000 U.S. Army trainees were housed in a massive tent city on the golf course grounds.

Azalea’s Historic Landmark from the Roaring 20’s
After the war, Admiral Farragut Academy purchased the hotel and golf course and established its campus here. Today’s Azalea neighborhood is built on the golf course property and includes the historic Jungle Hotel (now Farragut Hall).
